Young Carers

Young Carers

At Springfield, we are aware that some of our pupils are young carers. A young carer is someone between the ages of 5 and 25 who is helping to care for a family member or friend with a health condition, for example someone who is ill, disabled, misuses drugs or alcohol or has a mental health condition. This does not necessarily need to be practical support, they often take on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities. Research suggests there are at least 700,000 young carers in the UK but many do not realise they are a young carer.

We know that young carers may need a little extra support to enjoy and do well at school. At Springfield we are committed to ensuring that pupils who are young carers are identified, and supported effectively. This may mean something as simple as a child having additional support with completion of homework or adaptations being made for school drop off/pick up.

As a school, we also have links with ‘Trafford Carers Trust’ which is located next door to the school. We can offer information regarding referral to Trafford Carers Trust who offer lots of support and opportunities to Young Carers across the region. Please find below some additional information from Trafford Carers Trust. You may complete a self referral or you can speak to the school to support you. If you think your child might be a young carer and you would like to discuss this further, please feel free to contact Miss Beddow (Young Carers Lead) or Mrs Gardner (Assistant Headteacher).

At Springfield we care, learn and achieve together
