Year 1 Homework
The children will have some activities each week to complete at home to support the learning they have done in school. Reading at home will always continue throughout the year. Activities for homework may vary from week to week and will be posted on this section of the website. Year 1 Phonics Screening Check
In June, all children in Year 1 will complete the government Phonics Screening Check. Please find below a presentation explaining the screening check.

Geography
Our new topic is all about maps, mapping and direction. The children have been drawing maps of the classroom from a 'birds eye view' and learning how to make a simple key. We would like them to draw a map of their own bedroom using a birds eye view on a piece of paper from home. Please send the maps in so we can display them in our classroom.

Children's Mental Health Week
This week it is Children's Mental Health Week, the theme this year is 'This Is My Place' and having a sense of belonging. For example, belonging at home, at school, in clubs, religious/cultural communities, with friends.
Ask your child to think about a special place where they feel they 'belong', it could be a home/school/religious building/special room/an outside space or club for example.
Draw a picture of the special place and write a sentence about your special place. For example -

History
We have been starting to learn about the history of Springfield Primary School. The children have been introduced to timelines and we have discussed vocabulary such as 'past', 'present', '1 year ago', '2 years ago' etc.
We would like the children to create a simple timeline marking the significant events in their lives so far for homework. They can include photographs and/or drawings and short sentences.

In class we have been learning all about winter. Please could you support your child to practise and learn the poem 'Snowball' (please see below) off by heart ready to perform in small groups to the class next week. We have now learned about animals that are carnivores, herbivores or omnivores. Using a piece of paper from home, draw a large picture of an animal and write a sentence to say if they are a carnivore, herbivore or omnivore. e.g. a rabbit is a herbivore and eats grass, hay and vegetables. Add labels or extra information for a challenge. Please send your picture in for us to display in school.

As we have been learning about animal classification in Science, we would like the children to draw a (large) picture of an animal, focusing on detail and the animal's features. Write a sentence with the animal name and classification, e.g. 'A Giraffe is a mammal'. Add labels to challenge yourself further! Please use a piece of paper from home use colour if you wish. History/Oracy
We are looking at how life as a child has changed over time since their grandparents were little. We would like to create a mini classroom museum of artefacts from the past (from when the grandparent was a child). If you have them, we would like each child to bring in an item from the past to put on display in our mini classroom museum, for example, a teddy, doll, games, cassette tapes, baby clothes, photograph of grandparent playing with toy etc.
