ELSA

The Role of an ELSA in Our School

An ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) is a specially trained member of staff who works closely with children to support their emotional wellbeing. Trained by educational psychologists, ELSAs are equipped to help pupils understand and manage their emotions, develop resilience, and build positive relationships.

At our school, the ELSA provides a safe, supportive space where children can talk about their feelings and work through any challenges they may be facing—whether related to friendships, family, self-esteem, anxiety, or other emotional needs.

Through planned sessions tailored to each child, the ELSA helps pupils:

  • Recognise and express their emotions
  • Develop coping strategies
  • Improve social skills
  • Build confidence and self-awareness
  • Feel happier and more secure in school

The ELSA is a warm, caring adult who listens without judgment and works in partnership with teachers and families to help every child thrive emotionally and academically.
