Book Club

Book Club Year 3

During guided reading each week we will be holding a 'book club' which will be lead by two different children (each week) from each class. Over the course of the rest of the year, every child in the class will be given the opportunity to present their favourite book to the class. This can be a few minutes... up to ten-minute talk and can (but doesn’t need to!) include supporting materials e.g. prompts, poster, props, costume etc. We would rather children did not rely on PowerPoints as we would like to develop oracy skills, so no PowerPoints please!

We have prepared the following checklist for what could be included (not necessarily in order):

  • Name of Book.
  • Author (maybe some interesting background, if known)
  • Summary of the story (brief) - what happens? (without giving the whole story away!)
  • Favourite characters and explain why.
  • Why you enjoyed the book.
  • What genre/ story type is it and are there any similar books you would recommend?
  • Who do you think might enjoy this book?
  • Read an excerpt from the book (favourite part)

The Oracy Framework below will help children to prepare to deliver their presentation to the class, and guide children on the kind of feedback they will get.

As part of our Y3 oracy skills can your child focus on...

  • Speaking confidently in front of an audience
  • Summarising the story/text in key points
  • Thinking about position and posture when talking to an audience.

Many thanks for your continued support.
