This week the children have been exploring the traditional tale The Three Little Pigs. π·π
We began by mapping out the story together, thinking carefully about the different parts and what happens first, next and at the end. The children enjoyed retelling the story many times, becoming more confident each time as they remembered the sequence of events.
Reception have been celebrating Chinese Lunar New Year! π§§π
This week in Reception the children have been learning about Chinese Lunar New Year and how it is celebrated around the world. We talked about some of the traditions linked to the festival and why it is such an important and joyful celebration for many families.
This week in Reception, we have been learning all about the alphabet, focusing on both letter names and letter sounds. The children have been practising recognising letters, saying their names, and matching them to the correct sounds.
To make our learning fun and active, we played a game called “Clap, Clap, Turn Around, Tell Me the Letter Name and the Sound!” The children clapped, turned around, and confidently shared a letter name and its sound. It was a fantastic way to practise while keeping active!
We have also been singing our alphabet song each day to help us remember the order of the letters. The children have shown great enthusiasm and are making wonderful progress — well done, Reception! π
This week in Reception we’ve been busy learning all about how to join materials in different ways. The children explored using tools such as staplers and hole punches, and practised a range of cutting and joining techniques to connect different materials together. They talked about which tools worked best and learned how to use them safely and carefully. It was lovely to see the children experimenting, problem-solving and taking pride in their creations as they developed their fine motor skills and confidence. Well done, Reception! βοΈπβ¨
Our Reception children have been learning all about Winter βοΈ. We’ve been exploring what the season looks and feels like, how animals adapt to the cold, and discovering winter animals from around the world. As part of this learning, we’ve been celebrating Penguin Awareness Day, finding out where penguins live and how they stay warm in icy habitats π§. The children have shown great curiosity and enthusiasm as they learn about the natural world and seasonal changes πβ¨.
Our Reception children have been busy learning all about birds π¦. We’ve been spotting different birds, talking about their colours, beaks and feathers, and listening carefully to their sounds. We’re so proud of their curiosity and excitement as they explore the natural world around them πΏβ¨.
Today our Reception children enthusiastically took part in Odd Socks Day as part of Anti-Bullying Week. The classroom was full of bright colours, fun patterns, and lots of excited conversations as everyone proudly showed off their uniquely mismatched socks!
We talked about how wearing odd socks reminds us that we are all different and that our differences make us special. The children shared ideas about how to be kind, how to include others in play, and how to be a good friend.
Our Reception children have been learning all about Remembrance Day. We talked gently and thoughtfully about why people wear poppies and how this special day helps us remember and thank the brave men and women who helped keep us safe in the past and who continue to help us today.
Singing is such an important part of learning in Reception. It helps children to develop their listening and attention skills, language and vocabulary, and memory — all while having fun! We are so lucky to have Mr Boardman who visits us every Monday to sing our favourite songs with us and helps us to learn new ones too.
This week, Reception enjoyed reading the story We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt by Steve Metzger. The children loved joining in with the repeated phrases and spotting all the different autumn leaves. After reading the story, we took our learning outdoors and acted it out together! The children had so much fun pretending to climb over the mountain, paddle across the lake, and tiptoe through the forest, just like in the book. Lots of laughter, movement and teamwork!
This week, the children have been taking part in Dough Disco sessions — a fun and engaging way to strengthen the muscles in their hands and fingers! Using playdough and lively music, the children squeeze, roll, pinch, pat and poke the dough in time to the beat.
If you’d like to try it at home, all you need is some playdough and your favourite song — it’s a great way to build those little hand muscles while having fun together! πͺβ¨
In Reception we’ve been practising hopping, skipping, jumping, running, throwing and catching — all of the key movements that help us build strong coordination and balance.
To make our Pumpkin Soup story come to life, we had a special treat — tasting some real pumpkin soup! π₯£ The children helped to describe how it looked, smelled, and tasted, using fantastic vocabulary such as “orange,” “sweet,” and “warm”.
It was lovely to see so many happy faces and to hear the children making connections between our story and their real-life experience.
