World Book Day

This year's World Book Day goal was to share a million stories, so year 2 decided to re-tell a traditional tale using props. Once again our children were well prepared with costumes, home made props and even edible props too! We were also lucky enough to visit year six who were retelling stories they have read this year.

Performance Poetry.

In our English lessons, we have been learning about the features of poetry. We have learnt about kennings, alliteration, rhythm, rhyme, repetition and stanzas. We have written our own kennings to describe Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong. We have also performed poetry too, we chose our poem and worked in a group - together we are a team to practise and perform it. We talked about what makes a good performance and took tips from Michael Rosen! Here are two of our performances. Do you like them?

Super Science Homework.

As part of our Science topic - Animal Adaptations, year 2 were homework to research an animal, finding out how it is suited to their habitat. In school, the children had an opportunity to share their wonderful findings. 2 Dahl did an amazing job sharing their science homework. We had PowerPoint presentations, 3D cardboard models, clay models, posters, books and fact sheets. Thank you for all of your hard work at home.

Coding in Year 2

Year 2 Dahl have been having lots of fun learning about coding in computing.

They have learnt how to use blocks of code to create a computer program that uses collision detection.

Father Christmas

Since we have been working so hard this half term, we had a very special visitor this morning - Father Christmas!

Today a theatre company visited and treated us to a pantomime - Aladdin. We loved it!

Poppies

As part of our learning about World War 1 we have been making poppies. We made them out of clay using the 'slip and score' technique to attach the centre and the stem. After letting them dry we painted them using our knowledge about colour to add shading. We held an exhibition so that we could look at everyone's designs - aren't they amazing!

Year 2 Dahl's visit to Lark Hill Place

As part of our history topic 'Our Town Sale',  we visited Lark Hill Place to learn all about life as a Victorian.

We walked down a Victorian street and compared it to or our own streets in Sale. We discussed how very different it was in the Victorian times.

Learning about the different jobs people did around the house and also looking at the toys Victorian children played with was really interesting and made us even more aware of how life has changed.

Visit to Sale Town Hall Cenotaph

On the 11th day of the 11th month Year 2 Dahl visited the Cenotaph to remember the millions who had died at war.

Mrs Saleem read the poem 'In Flanders Field' by John McCrae

Children laid a wreath to remember the soldiers who died for us in WW1 and WW2 and said a prayer.

YEAR 2 DAHL ASSEMBLY

What an amazing assembly was performed by Year 2 Dahl for parents, carers, family and friends,

The assembly kicked off with children in amazing costumes talking about their favourite characters from Roald Dahl books followed closely by the Geography and History topic – 'My Town Sale.'

Children performed their parts brilliantly with clear and loud voices.

Well done, Year 2 Dahl!

Road safety!

What an exciting morning we had learning about road safety. After a fabulous assembly we all went outside to learn how to be safe near roads, especially when there are enormous lorries nearby. We all got to sit in the driver's seat of a real lorry and some of us blew the horn! It was so loud!

Just like Roald Dahl wrote, Year 2 Dahl believe:

'Somewhere inside all of us is the power to change the world'.

In English, Year 2 Dahl have been using their own success criteria to mark a piece of writing.

In our topic work we are going to be learning all about 'Our Town'. To begin with, we talked about the United Kingdom and what we thought it looked like on a map. What do you think of our maps?

At Springfield we care, learn and achieve together
