Science Fun We made the most of the sunshine and went out in and around the school grounds. We looked at similarities and differences between plants and trees, we looked at evergreen and deciduous trees and how they are different (we enjoyed playing a game about this) along with sketching some of the plants and trees that we saw.

Author of the month Our current author of the month is Nick Butterworth, he is a British writer and illustrator of children's books. His books have been published in over thirty languages, with international sales in the region of fiften million. He is most famous for his stories involving Percy. We will be sharing lots of his books with the children, if you have any of his books at home or you can get any from the library it would be great to read these with the children. Enjoy!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION!!

It is Starling's class assembly a week on Wednesday (4th March) at 2:45pm. Mrs Houston and I, have been working very hard with the children to produce an exciting class assembly for you all. We want to apologise for the very short notice as we were only recently informed that our assembly was scheduled to go ahead, as the school hall is now back in use! This means that we only have, just over ONE WEEK to write, practise and perform our assembly!! We want to sincerely thank you for your support with costumes (for those who require them), line rehearsing and singing practice at home! We couldn't do it without your support. We look forward to sharing the children's learning with you on the 4th March!

The children will be given their lines on either Monday 25th or Tuesday 26th February to practise. I've also included a song performed by Julia Donaldson based on the story 'Monkey Puzzle' that the children are learning. If you find you get the opportunity to also practise this at home it would be a massive help!

Thanks again!

Mrs Billingham and Mrs Houston.

World Book Day Year 1

Our focus for World Book day across the school is on Speaking and Listening.

The Year 1 team have devised a carousel of activities which the children will access during the day centred on the following books/themes:

  1. Julia Donaldson’s Monkey Puzzle
  2. The Naughty Bus by Jan and Jerry Oke
  3. Performance Poetry

The children will also be paired up with a Year 3 child to have a shared reading activity in replacement of our usual reading time.

Children will not be required to dress up for this day and we will provide everything in school.

Regards,

Year 1 Team

What's coming up?

In Science we are going to be investigating plants and trees. Maybe you could look at trees when at the park or on a walk and discuss evergreen and deciduous trees? What parts of plants do we eat? How are fruits different to vegetables?

Spring is on the way next term! We will consider how Spring is different to winter. Can you go on a Spring walk with your child? What clues tell you Spring is on the way? How is the weather different? why do the clocks go forward?

In Maths we are going to be working on length and height and introducing how to measure using a ruler, working with numbers to forty, place value, addition and subtraction (including word problems) and introducing multiplication with multiples of ten and two.

P.E Kits

Over the half term break we will be sending home P.E kits to be checked and washed. We have several children in each class that are still missing parts of their kit, please can you ensure your child has the following...

Outdoor kit -

navy/black jogging bottoms

blue polo T-shirt

pumps/trainers.

black/navy hoodie.

spare socks.

Indoor Kit -

blue polo T-shirt

pumps/trainers.

navy/black SHORTS.

Please make sure your child's kit is clearly labelled.

Please could you also encourage your child to practise dressing and undressing themselves over the half term holiday to encourage and develop their independence and also speed up the time it takes them to get changed for P.E in the morning. Thank you so much!

Spellings

As it will be the last week of half term next week, no spellings will be sent home with your child today. Please do however continue to read with your child as much as possible. Many thanks for your support as always.

Home Work Friday 6th December

Use the Purple Mash link to find your child's homework for this week. Their username is your child's initial and surname (no spaces) and their password is 2025. Click on the '2Do' icon to find your child's tricky word game for their homework. This needs to be completed by Wednesday 11th December. If you have any problems accessing Purple Mash please see your child's class teacher.

Week of the Production

Due to the week of the production being so busy, we will NOT be sending any spellings home this week (Week beg: 2.12.19) for the children. Thank you for your support!

Plea for our Class Fund!

Dear parents/carers,

Thank you so much to those who have kindly been contributing to our class fund since the start of the academic year!

Recently we have made lots of purchases to support the children's learning in class, such as craft items, play dough, baking items etc. If you are able to contribute to our class funds, we would really appreciate any further donations to support classroom activities as our 'class fund pot' is currently very low.

Many Thanks for your continued support!

Year 1 Team.

Christmas Crafting Fun!

During the last week of this Autumn Term, we are planning two Christmas Craft days in Year 1, where the children will be able to create a mixture of craft items and also bake some gingerbread for D.T. We would like to invite 2 parent volunteers from each class to help with baking and crafting in the classroom from 12:30pm on Wednesday the 18th December  and Thursday the 19th December. If you are able to help please speak to your child's class teacher. Many thanks!

Ourselves

Soon, we will be commencing our topic on 'Ourselves'; investigating bones inside the human body and animals and linking different body parts to our senses. Maybe you could discuss with your child what they already know about the human body?

Welcome to Year 1!

The Year 1 team would like to welcome our new children and families and congratulate the children on making such a smooth transition from Reception into Year 1; we will be continuing this transition over the coming weeks. The children have settled into their classes and new routines really well and we are so pleased to see their enthusiasm for learning and their kind and helpful attitudes.

On this class page, you will be able to find out about what we have been and what we will be learning about in Year 1 Goldfinch. It was great to meet those parents who came to the Welcome Meeting this week. For those who were unable to attend, please find below a copy of the PowerPoint presentation we shared.

Thank you for your continued support from home. We are really looking forward to the year ahead and all the super learning which will be taking place.
