Year 1 Goldfinch

Wednesday 25th March

Hi Goldfinch families,

I wanted to write a quick note to say "hi!" I hope you are all ok. I'm trying to keep busy and teach my children whilst I am missing all the year one children.

I hope you are all getting on ok with the home learning tasks- I can see a lot of work on spelling shed so well done!

mrs Billingham recorded a story yesterday, I will try and do the same too.

If you still haven't got your logins they are in the entrance to school.

Best wishes,

Mrs Newell

Friday's Smile day

New Date for Class Assembly

Just a quick note to say that Goldfinch's class assembly will be Wednesday 6th May at 2:45pm.

I am in discussions with the children as to whether we will change the assembly or keep our Chinese New Year assembly script. More information will be given once we have decided!

Many thanks
Mrs Newell

World Book Day Year 1

Our focus for World Book day across the school is on Speaking and Listening.

The Year 1 team have devised a carousel of activities which the children will access during the day centred on the following books/themes:

  1. Julia Donaldson’s Monkey Puzzle
  2. The Naughty Bus by Jan and Jerry Oke
  3. Performance Poetry

The children will also be paired up with a Year 3 child to have a shared reading activity in replacement of our usual reading time.

Children will not be required to dress up for this day and we will provide everything in school.

Year 1 Team

Author of the Month/Term

Each term we change our focus author. We want to instill a love of reading a variety of books with our children at school and at home. We have already explored the titles written by A.A. Milne and Shirley Hughes. Our Author for this half term is Tony Ross. Please have a look at home or in the library and talk about the different books he has written.

What's coming up?

In Science we are going to be investigating plants and trees. Maybe you could look at trees when at the park or on a walk and discuss evergreen and deciduous trees? What parts of plants do we eat? How are fruits different to vegetables?

Spring is on the way next term! We will consider how Spring is different to winter. Can you go on a Spring walk with your child? What clues tell you Spring is on the way? How is the weather different? why do the clocks go forward?

In Maths we are going to be working on length and height and introducing how to measure using a ruler, working with numbers to forty, place value, addition and subtraction (including word problems) and introducing multiplication with multiples of ten and two.

P.E Kits

Over the half term break we will be sending home P.E kits to be checked and washed. We have several children in each class that are still missing parts of their kit, please can you ensure your child has the following...

Outdoor kit -

navy/black jogging bottoms

blue polo T-shirt

black/navy hoodie.

spare socks.

Indoor Kit -

blue polo T-shirt

navy/black SHORTS.

Please make sure your child's kit is clearly labelled.

Please could you also encourage your child to practise dressing and undressing themselves over the half term holiday to encourage and develop their independence and also speed up the time it takes them to get changed for P.E in the morning. Thank you so much!

As it will be the last week of half term next week, no spellings will be sent home with your child today. Please do however continue to read with your child as much as possible. Many thanks for your support as always.

Class assembly

As I am sure you are aware, as the hall is out of action, our class assembly for this week has been cancelled. The children (and families) have been working so hard practising lines and getting costumes ready and I appreciate the effort. I am hoping that once the hall is back in action, we will be given another date. I will send an update as soon as I know.

Mrs Newell

All of Year 1 have been working with Nathan from Soccerwise on our ball skills. We started by throwing and catching with a partner, building up to adding a bounce and finally having some target practice on the goals. The children are all working hard together to hone their ball skills.

As we embark on our new topic "What makes my school special?", the children have been looking at the old building and sketching the features which demonstrate it is an older building. Through historical enquiry, we are learning about how we can find out about events and people from the past and will be interviewing some of our teachers to find out more about Mrs Spencer who was a previous head teacher at our school.

Homework, Spellings, Show and Tell and Class assembly

On Friday the children should have brought home quite a few things!

Homework: Family tree sheet and information about Purple Mash common exception words (to assist with spelling tests)- to be returned/completed by Wednesday 15th January.

Show and Tell Letter: As we love to read, we would like the children to research an author- bring in their book, find out some simple facts to share- timetable will be posted below.

Assembly: Lines and costume letters for our class assembly.

Calendar: As we are always looking at seasonal change, the children made a calendar showing how a tree changes during the four seasons.

Spellings: All children in Year 1 are going to be tested on the common exception words for Year 1 during this half term- all groups will therefore have the same spellings. All children need to be able to read and write these words by the end of Year 1.

If you are missing any of these items please let Mrs Newell know as soon as possible.

Save the date: Year 1 Goldfinch Class Assembly is Wednesday 29th January

Parts and costume letters will be given out during the first week of the Spring Term.

Please help your child to practice their lines at home once you have them. This is an important speaking and listening activity and will build on our excellent speakers and actors from the Christmas production!

The assembly will be at 2:50pm Wednesday 29th January and we look forward to sharing some of our learning with you then.

Mrs Newell

Thank you and Merry Christmas!

Thank you to all parents and carers for the kind and generous gifts given to the Year 1 team. We hope you enjoy a restful and peaceful Christmas. We can't wait to get back in January for more learning and fun!

A special visitor came  to Goldfinch class (6.12.19)

Home Work Friday 6th December

Use the Purple Mash link to find your child's homework for this week. Their username is your child's initial and surname (no spaces) and their password is 2025. Click on the '2Do' icon to find your child's tricky word game for their homework. This needs to be completed by Wednesday 11th December. If you have any problems accessing Purple Mash please see your child's class teacher.

Week of the Production

Due to the week of the production being so busy, we will NOT be sending any spellings home this week (Week beg: 2.12.19) for the children. Thank you for your support!

Plea for our Class Fund!

Dear parents/carers,

Thank you so much to those who have kindly been contributing to our class fund since the start of the academic year!

Recently we have made lots of purchases to support the children's learning in class, such as craft items, play dough, baking items etc. If you are able to contribute to our class funds, we would really appreciate any further donations to support classroom activities as our 'class fund pot' is currently very low.

Many Thanks for your continued support!

GIST Road Safety

Ian and Paul from  GIST road safety came into school with their HGV to teach the children about road safety and particularly how to be safe when their is a large vehicle. We looked at the stopping distance required and the several blindspots that the vehicles have.

In History, we have been learning about how life has changed since our grandparents were little, with a focus on the changes at school and at home. As part of this unit, we looked at photographs in the "Springfield Story" book to compare and contrast old classrooms with our classroom today. We explored toys, games and TV programmes from the past and present looking for clues to help us know if it was from now or years ago. The children were great at explaining their answers. We wrote questions for a grandparent to answer and one of our Goldfinch grandparents came in to answer them. He told us what life was like as a child, when he first got a TV and about the onion sellers in his street.

The children finished the topic by creating a news report to show the class what they had learnt.

Science- the human body

We gave the children "dog bone" biscuits to re-create the human skeleton. We watched the song "Dry bones" and then amended our skeletons to represent the true skeleton form.

*SAVE THE DATE - Wednesday 16th October*

We are currently finalising plans for our first Year 1 trip to Eureka Museum in Halifax. If any parent is able to join us on the trip and are DBS checked, we would greatly appreciate any offers of help !! Please see you class teacher. Trip letter will soon follow with full details, however we wanted to give you as much notice as possible for any parents who need to take time off work!

Many Thanks!

Show and Tell

This week, your child should have brought home the letter for "show and tell". Please see below for the schedule if it didn't make it home.

Soon, we will be commencing our topic on 'Ourselves'; investigating bones inside the human body and animals and linking different body parts to our senses. Maybe you could discuss with your child what they already know about the human body?

Welcome to Year 1!

The Year 1 team would like to welcome our new children and families and congratulate the children on making such a smooth transition from Reception into Year 1; we will be continuing this transition over the coming weeks. The children have settled into their classes and new routines really well and we are so pleased to see their enthusiasm for learning and their kind and helpful attitudes.

On this class page, you will be able to find out about what we have been and what we will be learning about in Year 1 Goldfinch. It was great to meet those parents who came to the Welcome Meeting this week. For those who were unable to attend, please find below a copy of the PowerPoint presentation we shared.

Thank you for your continued support from home. We are really looking forward to the year ahead and all the super learning which will be taking place.
