We have had such a lovely, lovely day together today. Running, playing in the garden, choosing time, singing, dancing and even a trip from the ice cream van!! The children certainly brought their smiles, as requested and we hope they have had a day that they will remember. 

We hope to see you all again soon, but in the meantime, please keep us updated with your activities on Tapestry. But most of all, please stay safe, look after each other and enjoy some time with your beautiful children.

Reception Maths Workshop

 

Thank you to all of you who attended our Maths Workshop last week.  We hope you found it useful to see the types of resources and activities we use in Reception.  If you did not attend the meeting, you have hopefully received your pack of useful activities and ideas by now.  We will continue to send Maths challenges home in your child's book bag, so don't forget to check.

Reception Oak enjoyed some pancake fun on Tuesday, learning all about Shrove Tuesday and the traditions behind the celebration. We discussed the ingredients needed to make a pancake and also what favourite toppings the children would be having on theirs at home. To end the day, each child got the chance to taste a pancake and chose either sugar and lemon or syrup for their topping. Every child had at least a nibble, some demolishing the whole lot!! If you and your families celebrated “Pancake Day” at home, we would love to see some of your flippin’ moments shared on Tapestry.

We would be really grateful if you could save any boxes or empty packages that are CUBE or CUBOID shapes over the holidays, to help us with some construction activities when we return to school. As always, other packaging and empty containers are also welcomed for junk modelling.

Well done everybody for a great first week of ‘walking to school’. So many children have walked, scooted, cycled and used ‘park and stride’ to get to school. Please keep up with your fantastic efforts as much as possible!

 

Reading Update

Your child will have brought home their first reading book today and you should have received an important letter by email to accompany the book.  The reading book, reading record and packet must come back to school every day.  A copy of the letter is available below:

Please note that our day to visit the library has changed from Friday to Wednesday.  Please ensure your child has their library book in their book bag each Wednesday.

Happy New Year!

We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year and are ready for the exciting Spring term ahead. 

The children returned to school full of beans, excited to tell us all about their Christmas holidays. We loved hearing about all the places they had visited and of course all the gifts they received from Father Christmas. We would like to thank you for all our lovely cards and generous gifts - we are very lucky teachers!

 

Following on from our visitors before Christmas, where we learnt about Christmas celebrations in other countries around the world. Reception celebrated ‘Kings Day’, a traditional Spanish celebration. The children learnt about how it took the kings until the 6th of January to reach Bethlehem to visit baby Jesus and about other Spanish traditions, such as Roscon de Reyes (Kings cake). The children really enjoyed making Kings crowns and decorating their very own Kings cake (a donut with sweets on top).

Reception Oak were very excited for this weeks Mystery Reader. Bringing in the Christmas spirit, Miss Gilmore came to read to our children as Mother Christmas. The children loved the story, Little Robin Red Vest. They sat beautifully and listened well, Miss Gilmore was very impressed.

This week we have been exploring our brand new, amazing, interactive tables. The tables offer many exciting opportunities for the children to engage with technology and inspire learning, and they will be used in Reception on a daily basis. The children have loved exploring some of the features this week.

After we learned about the Nativity Story and Advent, we began to talk about how countries around the world celebrate Christmas differently.

 

Max's Mummy came in to talk to us about how Christmas is celebrated in Sweden. We learned about receiving presents on Christmas Eve from Santa Claus himself, known as Tomten, and having a feast on the evening of Christmas Day.  We also heard about the celebration of Santa Lucia on 13th December and tasty kanelbullar (cinnamon swirls) that are enjoyed.

 

Marco's Mummy came in to talk about Christmas celebrations in Spain where Epiphany is very important. We learned how Spanish people receive a visit from Papa Noel on Christmas Eve. Then Children and families in Spain attend a special parade on 6th January and celebrate the arrival of the Wise Men. We heard how children leave their shoes out and receive presents from the Wise Men as well as having a delicious ring-shaped cake to eat called Rosca de Reyes representing the Wise Men's search for Jesus. If you find the hidden toy King in the cake, you are King or Queen for the day!

We are now learning tricky red words. These words cannot be sounded out.  We often use the statement ‘you can’t Fred a red’ (you cannot Fred talk (sound out) a red word).  These words need to be learnt by sight.  The children will use the letter pattern and initial sound to help them recall the word.  They are common words we use everyday. Please practise the new red words we send home each week. Thank you for your continued support.

An amazing and fascinating week in Reception exploring lots of different technology. The children have programmed BeeBots and Code-A-Pillars, taken photographs on digital cameras, explored using Robodog, completed new computer programs, built their own electrical circuits to light up a bulb, made their own representations of technology through junk modelling and have talked about what technology actually is. Please don’t forget to upload any examples of your children using any technology at home onto Tapestry, this could include using tablets, computers, iPads, remote control toys, tv remotes, helping with the washing machine, operating radios, music players etc.

Today we talked about Children In Need day, we talked about why we raise money for other children, what the money might help to buy and some of the different activities that people take part in to raise money. Following this discussion, the children decided that they should do an impromptu ‘sponsored silence’!! They stayed silent for over 3 minutes, so Mrs Bevan and Mrs Davies both pledged to donate £3 each on their behalf to Children In Need, for every minute of their silence! The children also decided that for their next fundraising activity, they would like to do a ‘danceathon’...in their pyjamas!! Watch this space....!

This week we have been celebrating Anti-bullying week by having a “Kindness week” in Reception. The children came to school wearing odd socks to show that it’s ok to be different and how we should be proud of who we are.

We have been enjoying lots of activities in class, such as pairing up odd socks, designing their own odd socks, pegging up odd socks on a washing line and even dancing in their odd socks!

We also had a special surprise for the children, a video message from CBeebies presenter Andy from Andy and the Odds socks, for all the children at Springfield.  He told us how important it is to be kind to each other and reminded Mrs Chard to wear her odd socks too! 

Thank you for supporting such an important week in school.

We Love To Read!!!

 

We have a wide range of story books in our Reception classrooms, of both traditional, popular and new authors. We also visit the school library every week, which is well stocked with high quality stories and non-fiction books for the children to choose from.

Today, the School Nurse came into Reception and talked to us about the importance of brushing our teeth and washing our hands. She talked about when we should wash our hands and we learned how we should be washing them to keep those germs at bay! Maybe your children could show you how we wash our hands properly!
